About John

Since first being elected your State Representative in November of 2002, I have had the honor to represent you and our great Como Park, North End, East Side, and Hamline Midway neighborhoods at the State Capitol. The focus of my time at the legislature, and throughout my life, has been on enhancing economic, racial, gender and social justice for Minnesotans – no matter where they live, who they are, where they pray, or who they love.

You sent me to the legislature to fight for consumer protections against big pharma, to work to dismantle unjust, regressive and overly punitive parts of our criminal justice system and to lead the charge for earned sick and safe time for all workers. And that is what I have done. All the while, my goal has remained the same – to help create a Minnesota in which we all thrive.

As the current Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, I have secured increased funding for our vital Public Defenders – who far too frequently are the last refuge of justice in our often-unjust system. I have successfully championed laws to criminalize the illegal sharing of personal photos (so-called “revenge porn”) and prioritized the decriminalization of poverty through reforms to our unfair system of fines, fees, cash bail, and forfeiture.

I first learned the vitality of shared power and community action as an active member of AFSCME Local #3757 and a delegate to the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly. My union brothers and sisters know that “we all do better when we all do better,” and their commitment to leaving no Minnesotan behind has guided my time in the legislature. Through the power of our collective action, we can build a community rooted in equity, opportunity and justice.

Together with your partnership, my wife, Melissa, and our daughters Alice, Eleanor and Eilah are dedicated to continuing to serve you at the State Capitol.
